Patmos island is sometimes called “Jerusalem of the Aegean Sea”. This is a lovely island in its own right, but it is best known as the place where St. John wrote the ‘Revelation’ (the last book of the New Testament). The landscape of the island's capital is dominated by the 6th century fortress monastery of St. John , where many important religious relics can be seen. Despite the fact that it is visited by thousands of tourists, Patmos strongly retains the character of a traditional island with its unique atmosphere.
The trip to Patmos by hydrofoil ("flying dolphin") takes approximately 2 hours. When we get to Patmos there will be a bus waiting to take us to the Monastery that is built high on a rocky hill where we will stay for about an hour to visit the museum that is there. Then we will take a 5 minute bus drive up to the cave where St. John received the revelation and stay there for about 45mins. After this tour through the Monastery, you will be free to take a walk through the main village of Chora. This is a medieval village, built around the Byzantine monastery of St.John, with white houses in the typical Aegean style. Chora is a small community in itself, with lots of charming little restaurants, bars and some exquisite shops. There will be time for shopping or to have lunch in Chora village before taking the boat back to Kos.
